The First 3 Months: Things Nobody Tells You About the Fourth Trimester

Everyone prepares you for the baby shower. They help you pick out the prettiest tiny outfits, recommend the best strollers and tell you exactly what to pack in your hospital bag ๐Ÿ›️๐ŸŒฟ

You spend months dreaming about the moment you finally hold your little one in your arms, thinking that's where the wildest part of the journey ends.

But then you bring your baby home ๐Ÿ  ๐Ÿ˜‡

Suddenly, the visitors leave, the quiet sets in, and you find yourself staring at this tiny human, and in the mirror, realizing no one actually warned you about what comes next ๐Ÿค”
Welcome to the fourth trimester.

Those first three months are the most beautiful, messy, sleep-deprived blur where a baby is born, but a mother is also being made from scratch.

It's a time filled with fierce, overwhelming love, but also hormonal crashes and crying over spilled breast milk at 2:00 AM๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„

If you are currently in the first 90 days and feeling a little lost, exhausted or wondering if anyone else is experiencing this level of chaos, take a deep breath honey, you are not alone ๐Ÿซ‚

Let's talk about the raw, beautiful, unfiltered things nobody actually tells you about the fourth trimester down below ❤️๐Ÿ‘‡

1) Your Postpartum Body and Healing ๐Ÿต️

You pack your comfiest clothes for the hospital,  thinking your belly will just shrink right back down.

But the truth is, you leave looking like you are still five months pregnant, wearing the biggest, most unglamorous mesh underwear you’ve ever seen.

I remember looking in the mirror and thinking, "Wait, is there another baby still in there ?" ๐Ÿ˜…

  •  Take a deep breath, your body grew a whole human for nine months; it is absolutely normal to look and  feel pregnant for a while after giving birth.

2) The Day 3 Weeps: It's Not You, It's the Hormones ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ’™

Around day three or four, your milk comes in and your hormones completely drop. Nobody warned me that I would find myself crying hysterically over a silly TV commercial or sobbing because my husband breathed a little too loudly next to me. ๐Ÿ˜…

You aren't losing your mind at all; your body is just going through a massive hormonal reset and it is completely normal to feel super emotional ๐Ÿ˜ญ❤️
  •  Let it out: Crying doesn't mean you are a bad mom, or you don't love your baby; it just means your body is resetting.
  • This will pass: The extreme emotional rollercoaster of the first week drops off as your hormones stabilize. You've got this ๐Ÿ’ช

3) The Extreme Sleep Deprivation ๐Ÿฅฑ

We all know newborns don't  sleep, but sleep deprivation in fourth trimester hits different. It's the kind of exhaustion where you find yourself rocking a random couch cushion instead of the baby, putting the milk in the pantry instead of the fridge.

I once spent five minutes looking for my phone while using the flashlight  on my phone to find it ๐Ÿ˜‚
  • Lower the bar: The house can be messy, and the dishes can wait. Sleep whenever that sweet baby gives you a window.
  • You will sleep again: This survival mode is temporary. Eventually, those two-hour stretches turn into four, then six, and you will feel human again.
Navigating these sleepless nights takes so much grace, so check out how to survive sleep deprivation during postpartum for gentle ways to protect your energy and mental health. ๐Ÿ’ค๐Ÿ˜ด

4) The Midnight Google Searches ๐Ÿ”

The middle-of-the-night feeding sessions are dangerous, mostly because of Google.

You start by looking up " Is baby poop supposed to look blackish ?" and by 3:40 AM, you've convinced yourself your baby has a rare tropical disease๐Ÿ˜‚.

I used to stare at my sleeping baby, checking if his chest was moving every thirty seconds, while typing the most silly questions into my phone screen with one thumb. ๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿซฃ
  • Step away from the search bar: If your baby is feeding, sleeping, and wetting diapers, they are likely doing amazing.
  • Trust your instincts: You know your baby better than anyone. So just trust that you are doing everything accordingly.

5) The Visitor Dilemma & Protecting Your ✌️Peace ✌️ ๐Ÿชท

Suddenly, everyone and their cousin wants to pop by to "see the baby" (and by see the baby, they mean hold the baby while you play hostess and serve them tea).

There is nothing as annoying as trying to learn how to nurse while your mother-in-law or sister-in-law is sitting a foot away, giving you unasked-for advice.

I quickly learned the art of the "faking my baby has pooped " just so I could escape to the bedroom for some quiet time! ๐Ÿšช๐Ÿ‘€
  •  Your house, your rules: It's completely okay to say " We aren't taking visitors this week." True loved ones will understand.
  • Let them help: If people do come, don't play hostess. Hand them a broom or tell them to bring lunch.

6) Changes in Your Relationship ❤️

Your love life changes instantly because you and your partner are suddenly teammates in the ultimate survival game.

When you’re both running on two hours of sleep, a simple question like "Where are the wipes?" can sound like a declaration of war.

We had to learn to have a "forget and forgive policy " for the petty things said at 2:00 AM when we were in a big fight ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍❤️‍๐Ÿ‘จ

  • Give each other grace: You are both learning a completely new job with no training. Choose to believe the best in each other ๐Ÿซ‚๐Ÿค
  • Keep talking: Even a quick five minutes hug in the kitchen while the baby sleeps can keep you connected.

Finding time to reconnect with yourself and your partner after birth is a process, so take a look at how to feel sexy again after having a baby for tips on regaining your confidence and intimacy. ๐Ÿ’…๐Ÿ’–

7) Falling in Love With Your Baby ❤️๐Ÿผ

The scariest thing nobody tells you is how deeply, overwhelmingly, and terrifyingly you will love this tiny human.

You’ll be so exhausted you can barely stand, but then you look at their little face, and your heart literally aches with how much you want to protect them.

It’s a love that makes you want to cry because it’s so big, and it’s the most beautiful, unfiltered part of the entire journey ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿผ

  • You are the perfect mom for them: Your baby doesn't need a perfect house or a perfect routine; they just need you.
  • Take it one day at a time: You are doing an incredible job mama. Cherish the tiny moments, because they really do grow so fast.

Conclusion✨๐ŸŒธ

The first three months are definitely a wild, messy, and exhausting ride. But amid the sleepless nights and the hormonal tears, there is also so much beautiful magic.

If you are in the thick of it right now, just take it one day at a time. Be gentle with yourself, understand your partner too , and remember you are doing an amazing job, mama! ๐Ÿซ‚❤️
